The legacy of Mary Keith lives on with scholarship fund

The legacy of Mary Keith will live on forever with the establishment of the Mary Keith Memorial Scholarship fund.

Keith, a member of the 2018 graduating class of White House High School touched the lives of many in White House and the Middle Tennessee area. Her story of hope and courage brought the community closer together to “Fight Like a Girl.” Last February she lost her battle to cancer.

The scholarship fund will benefit students a male and female at White House High School, White House Heritage High School, and Christian Community School. A total of six scholarships per year at $1,000 (one thousand dollars) per scholarship, for five years at six per year, and a total scholarship fund of $30,000 (thirty thousand dollars).

Kris Freeman Pastor at Revolution Church and Sports Information Director at White House wanted to do something to keep her legacy going in the community.

On a Spring day in 2012 was the first time that Freeman had met Keith. He was there to say a prayer at the opening day ceremonies as Keith was to deliver the first pitch.

Freeman recently approached White House High School Principal Scott Langford about the idea of a scholarship fund. Langford was quickly on board as this had been something on his mind. Freeman also reached out to Mary’s family to get there blessing. They agreed and thought this was a great way to keep her memory alive in the community.

“Mary’s story really brought the community of White House together,” Freeman added.

The night that Keith passed away Freeman was there to lead prayer as the community came together for a basketball game between White House High School and White House Heritage.

“Mary’s story inspired a lot of people here and there a few ways to keep her legacy going for a long time,” Freeman said. “The best way to do that is to benefit many other students by helping them go to college. Both her family and school officials thought this was the best way.”
