Davidson Academy one step away from Cookeville

Friday could be a milestone evening for Davidson Academy’s football team.

The Bears have an opportunity to sew up a spot in their first state championship game since 2008 with a victory over visiting Donelson Christian Academy.

Though the two teams did not meet in the regular season, they are familiar opponents, having played every season since 2009.

Davidson Academy (11-0) as six wins in 26 tries against DCA (8-3), though the Bears won the most recent showdown last season by a 35-21 margin.

DCA enters the game on a four-game winning streak following last week’s 52-31 victory over Fayette Academy. The Wildcats have scored at least 30 points in six of their eight victories this season.

Senior tailback Hunter Wyatt and senior quarterback Henry Mosley lead the Wildcats’ offense, with senior wide receiver Jamison Greenway providing a threat in the passing game.

The Bears’ defense played a big role in last week’s 28-24, come-from-behind victory over Mt. Juliet Christian, forcing three turnovers. Junior Da’Joun Hewitt, named this week as a Mr. Football finalist in Division II-Class A, rumbled for 227 yards and three touchdowns against the Saints, his ninth game with three scoring runs.

Nashville Christian plays at Friendship Christian in the other semifinal, guaranteeing an all-Middle Tennessee championship game in two weeks at Tennessee Tech University.
