Sumner County Schools will be closed on Friday due to predicted ice and snow, according to a notice at sumnerschools.org.
The school system web site also said school administrative offices would close.
Due to warmer temperatures and rain earlier in the week, the rapid drop in temperatures is expected to create hazardous conditions quickly on roadways.
Josh Barnwell, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Nashville, said temperatures will likely start to drop between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. and will continue to fall throughout the day. The storm is moving from north to south. In turn, Barnwell said that northern counties will get the cold weather first.
He expects the area will get some rain in the morning followed by a mixture of sleet and freezing rain. However, it should turn to snow by the afternoon. He said to expect between one and two inches of snow.
