Portland ‘Secure the Call’ cellphone drive aims to give everyone 911 access

Portland’s Tennessee Computer Doctors is calling on the community to increase low-income individuals’ access to emergency services by donating old cell phones.

A Secure the Call cellphone donation box has been placed outside the store’s 103 South Broadway location.

Secure the Call is a national coalition of over 300 various organizations, from police departments to senior centers, that commit to giving donated phones out to the people who need them.

Organization volunteers wipe the phones clean of any old contacts or other stored information. The phones are then charged, cleaned and tested before being given away.

“Secure the Call has asked us to hold a phone drive to collect used phones needed for their program,” a Tennessee Computer Doctors representative said. “They have provided us with a collection box and are asking that anyone with an old phone, along with any accessories, to donate it to the program.”

Cellphone donations are tax deductible. The tax form can be downloaded from Secure the Call’s website
