Man with knife confronts officers in Police Department parking lot

A man holding a knife confronted two police officers in the parking lot of the Hendersonville Police Department early Tuesday morning in an incident some are characterizing as an attempted “suicide by police officer.”

At approximately 6 a.m. on May 16, 2017, Hendersonville Sgt. Garrett was confronted by a man identified as David Starko, 64, who was holding a long-bladed knife, as Garrett approached police headquarters. Starko is reported to have told Sgt. Garrett that one of them was going to die today

Officer Stephen Wilson came to the assistance of Garrett as Starko continued to walk in the direction of Sgt. Garrett, still holding the knife. Garrett was able to deploy his Taser, which had limited effect on Starko. Wilson followed up by also deploying his Taser, which brought Starko to his knees. Garrett and Wilson were able to secure Starko and requested emergency medical assistance. Neither officer was injured during the incident.

Starko was transported to the Hendersonville Medical Center for evaluation and treatment.

According to a press release, warrants will be obtained charging David Starko with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer.

Anyone with information regarding this or other crime is encouraged to call the Hendersonville Crime Stoppers at 615-573- 5400.
