Hendersonville and Gallatin make list of safest cities in Tennessee

By CHRIS LADD

Great news for Sumner County residents. Two of the safest cities in the state are located right here according to the National Council for Home Safety and Security.

Hendersonville and Gallatin finished in the top ten as Hendersonville ranked sixth and Gallatin ranked ninth. Just missing the top 10 was White House at number 11. Other Sumner cities that made the list include Goodlettsville at 12 and Portland at number 15. Millersville and Westmoreland weren’t included in the list as the populations for both cities are less than 10,000.

As apart of the methodology to identify the safest cities in Tennessee they reviewed the most recent FBI uniform crime report statistics along with their own population data and internal research. They eliminated any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI and removed cities with populations under 10,000.

The remaining cities were ranked based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) per 1,000 people. These variables were then weighted, with violent crimes accounting for 1.5 of the total (due to their severity) than property crimes.

Hendersonville with a population of 56,965 had 75 violent crimes which averaged 1.32 per 1,000 and 874 property crimes with 15.34 for 1,000. Gallatin with a population of 35,154 had 139 violent crimes for 3.95 per 1,000 and 452 property crimes for 12.86 per 1,000.

White House has a population of 11,419 with 41 violent crimes which averaged 3.59 per 1,000 and 196 property crimes per 1,000 at 17.16. Goodlettsville which splits Davidson and Sumner County has a population of 23,358 with 54 violent crimes which averaged 2.31 per 1,000 and 518 property crimes that was equal to 22.18 per 1,000.

Portland with a population of 12,502 had 45 violent crimes which averaged 3.60 per 1,000 and 278 property crimes that was 22.24 per 1,000.

Brentwood took home the title as the safest city in Tennessee. The rest of the top five include Spring Hill, Collegedale, Germantown, and Mount Juliet.
