The National Weather Service is predicting freezing temperatures and a mixture of snow and rain on Friday morning for Middle Tennessee.

Josh Barnwell,  meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Nashville, said temperatures will likely start to drop between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. and will continue to fall throughout the day. The storm is moving from north to south. In turn, Barnwell said that northern counties will get the cold weather first.

He expects the area will get some rain in the morning followed by a mixture of sleet and freezing rain. However, it should turn to snow by the afternoon. He said to expect between one and two inches of snow.

Drivers on Interstate 65 should be careful coming home on Friday night, Barnwell said, because it’s possible that the rain will create a thin layer of ice underneath the snow.

The National Weather Service predicts that freezing temperatures will last through Sunday. By Monday afternoon, the temperature could reach almost 40 degrees.
