Election 2018: Who is running and what seats are up for the taking?


Eight Sumner County cities will have municipal elections on November 6, 2018, in conjunction with the Federal and State General Election. Listed below are the participating cities as well as the candidates who have filed and the seats that are up for grabs.

Petitions for offices in the following cities will be issued:

  • Gallatin – Mayor, City Recorder, Alderman-at-Large and Alderman for Districts 3, 4 and 5
  • Hendersonville – One Alderman from each of the six city wards; Ward 3 – Unexpired Term
  • Millersville – Two Commissioners-at-Large
  • Mitchellville – Mayor and three Commissioners-at-Large
  • Portland – Mayor and three Commissioners-at-Large
  • Westmoreland – Mayor and two Aldermen-at-Large
  • White House, Mayor and Alderman Ward 2.

Steve Fann, Ed Mayberry, Jerry Swallows, and Aaron J. Thomas have picked up papers to run for the Gallatin Alderman-at-Large seat. Jimmy Overton and Craig Hayes have picked up qualifying papers in their respected race. In the Gallatin Alderman District 5 race, three have picked up papers including John D. Alexander Sr, Sheila Middleton, and Deondra Moore.

Current Gallatin Mayor Paige Brown returned qualifying papers last week in her re-election campaign for mayor of Gallatin. Connie Kittrell has picked up papers to remain the City Recorder for Gallatin.

In Hendersonville, one Alderman from each of the six city Wards is up for grabs including Ward 1 Peg Petrelli, Ward 2 Pat Campbell, Ward 3 Arlene Cunningham and Paul Frisbee (two-year unexpired term), Ward 4 Stephen C. Brown, Ward 5, Chris Spencer, and Ward 6 Matt Stamper and Kenny Furr.

Bonnie Coleman and David Gregory have both picked up papers for Millersville Commissioner.

The city of Portland will be voting on a new mayor as current mayor Ken Wilber has decided not to seek re-election. Mike Callis has officially qualified as a candidate for mayor as he returned qualifying papers on Wednesday. Beverly G. Watson is the only other person to pull papers in the race for Portland mayor.

Thomas Dillard, Gail Gentry, Mike Hall, and Chuck Lyons have all picked up papers to run for City Alderman in Portland.

Westmoreland has two Alderman seats open. Currently Douglas Brown and Patricia Hawkes have pulled paperwork to run.

The city of Westmoreland is also electing a mayor. Fredia Carter and Caleb “Westmoreland Lake” Sawicki have picked up papers to run.

Three candidates have picked up papers to run for Mayor of White House including incumbent Mike Arnold. Keith Futch and Tim Judge. Farris Bibb has picked up papers for White House Alderman 1. Judge, John Decker, and Michael Wall pulled papers to run for Ward 2 in White House.

Candidates wanting to pick up Qualifying Petitions can do so at the Sumner County Election Commission Office, 355 N. Belvedere Drive, Room 106 Gallatin, TN 37066.
